Chapter Thirteen
I tried to be fast, but Myrtle spotted us in the garage from the back of Nicolai Bledâs 1921 Maybach as Rocco drove in.
So close.
My beloved godmother opened her door and got out, âWhere do you think youâre going alone?â
âIâm not alone,â I said and pointed down. When I said us, I meant me and Pickpocket. For the first time in her life, Fats was slow, not to mention a little loopy from the double cream hot chocolate. Weâd outrun her.
Myrtle wasnât satisfied and she asked again, âWhere are you and Pick going?â
âSt. Seb,â I said. âIâm not fired yet.â
She came over to kiss my cheek. âFired? How ridiculous. Who would fire you?â
Ann, Shawna, my old temp firm, a couple of doctorsâ wives.
âNobody today,â I said. âSo I have to, wait, whatâs happening?â
Rocco helped Millicent out of the car and grimaced at me. He usually loved driving the Maybach so something was up.
âNothing, dear, just getting ready for the party,â said Millicent.
Party?
âOh, right,â I said as Fats lurched into the garage.
âIâm ready. What are we waiting for?â she said.
Crap on a cracker.
âYou, I guess,â I said. âAre you okay? There wasnât alcohol in that hot chocolate, was there?â
âNo, but I havenât had that much fat in one sitting inâ¦ever.â
The Girls went for Fats, trying to stand on their tiptoes to test her temperature and failing to reach the heights of her forehead.
âMy dear, you donât look well at all,â said Myrtle. âCome back in the house.â
âIâm taking Mercy to St. Seb,â said Fats, leaning down to have her head examined.
âNo fever,â announced Millicent. âBut weâre not taking any chances with that baby. Back in the house.â
âI canât,â she said.
The Girls tried to herd Fats toward the house, looking like a couple of sleek birds in their Chanel suits trying to move a building from the Las Vegas strip.
Rocco kept an eye on them as he began pulling packages out of the front seat of the Maybach and whispered to me, âWe went shoppingââhe had a wild look about himââfor crackers and cheese.â
Well, there you go. The dreaded crackers and cheese.
I smiled at him and whispered, âDid you find what you were looking for?â
âMaybe. I donât know what it was,â he said.
âDid you do olive oil and vinegar?â
âI tasted so much oil I feel slippery to the touch,â he said. âHave you done this shopping trip?â
âSo many times,â I said, leaning over. âWhat party?â
âChristmas for the staff.â
âHoly crap. I forgot. Enjoy the arranging.â
âArranging?â Rocco asked, his eyes wide.
âYou have to figure out which oils go with which breads.â I went for the exit, but he snagged me. âHey, Millicent!â
âYes, Rocco?â The Girls turned back and Fats attempted to dart around them, but Myrtle had a lot better reflexes than youâd think and blocked her.
âMy sister looks like heâ bad. I think I should go with Mercy and Fats should take it easy and do the arranging,â he said, dripping with brotherly concern.
âBeat it, Skinny MacSwizzle Stick,â said Fats. âThatâs my gig.
